You may have heard that CrossFit Training is one of the toughest training workouts out there. You may also have heard that firemen and law enforcement officers train with CrossFit to boost their strength and stamina for their demanding jobs. All these can seem very intimidating to the beginner who is contemplating taking up CrossFit.
Do not panic. CrossFit is not like a Navy SEALs bootcamp. Even beginners can start off with CrossFit and gradually build up their strength and stamina till they reach a level where they are comfortable doing the advanced workouts.
Even if you are overweight or have led a sedentary lifestyle for years, you can start off with CrossFit today. What matters is that you take it slow and not over-exert yourself. You are not in competition with anyone but yourself and all you need to do is make small, incremental progress over time.
Ideally, you should join a CrossFit class with a certified trainer who will guide you. It is crucial that you learn how to do the different exercises correctly and with good form. You must always have good form when executing the exercises even when doing them fast. If you sacrifice from for speed, you may end up injuring yourself and that will not be pleasant.
CrossFit workouts may use combat ropes, rowing machines, deadlifts, etc. as part of the routine. You should learn how to use the equipment properly. If you plan on doing CrossFit at home, you may not have access to certain equipment. So, it would be advisable to find out what other exercises can be done to substitute for the lack of equipment.
Get comfortable yet sturdy attire that fits snugly so that you are comfortable during your workout. You may wish to get gloves too. Good shoes are essential for cushioning, support and traction. Vary your CrossFit workouts. Do a different one each time so that your body doesn’t have time to adapt and your results do not plateau. Initially, when you start training with CrossFit, you may wish to do 2 sessions a week. This will give your body time to rest. It also gives your central nervous system a break. CrossFit workouts are highly demanding.
As you progress, you may wish to do 3 or 4 workouts a week depending on how you feel. There are many people who do CrossFit daily but this is not necessary. 3 to 4 times a week is more than enough. If you overdo it, you might be setting yourself up for injury.
All beginners should start with the heaviest weight that they can safely lift. There shouldn’t be struggle or jerking involved. The weight should present a challenge but not be a torture to move. You want your muscles to get accustomed to the resistance and moves first.
If all you can lift is the bar without plates, then so be it. You will progress over time. Do not try to speed things up by adding more weight than you can handle. It will not work.
As a beginner, the most important thing you should look out for is safety. Be safe during your workouts and err on the side of caution. Learn as much as you can about CrossFit. Get to know the people in your CrossFit gym. They will be very supportive and motivate you when you are trying to do your best. It’s always good to have people cheering in your corner.
As long as you do not quit doing CrossFit, you will make progress over time. It is inevitable. Most people never stick to any program long enough to see benefits. Promise yourself that you will do CrossFit for at least 3 months. Once you notice how your body transforms, you will gladly make CrossFit a part of your life.
